UMA Vision – Workplace Maps & The Metaverse
The term Metaverse can be traced back to Neal Stephenson’s 1992 cyberpunk novel Snow Crash. In the book, the leading character is a hacker who is able to switch between a dystopian Log Angeles and the so-called “Metaverse” which is a virtual world where avatars interact. 30 years on and incredibly Neal Stephenson’s fictional concept is looking like it could become a reality.
Facebook changed its name to Meta in 2021, this signalled Mark Zuckerberg’s ambitions for his business & to be a leader in the development of the metaverse.
According to many experts, the Facebook metaverse won’t be the only one in existence, it will be one of many. The theory is that each person or organisation would build their own metaverse, but each metaverse would be inter-operable be this via direct communication or a platform offered in the future to allow such inter-operability.
UMA Vision has had the ability to turn digitised office spaces into 3D floorplans for some time, the facilities manager can either see a 2D live map (Article shown here) showing occupancy, bookings, no shows or convert this view to 3D and navigate around the office just as if you were there in person. Our existing customers really like this feature & it allows for users who work for large enterprises with multiple offices to navigate around the building before attending the site. Another customer using our Platform was in the process of having the office re-built but provided us to scale floor plans which we digitised and this allowed them to navigate through the office even before it was built.
Currently, only navigation is possible through our 3D maps but the possibilities are endless, UMA Vision has the ability to monitor & control devices within the Vision Portal, this could mean in the future a facilities manager could go into 3D and turn on / off a monitor which was left on within the office space or control the office lights remotely resulting in an energy cost saving.
Imagine being able to navigate to a desk, selecting the Avatar sat at that desk and instantly being placed in a 4k video call with the person you wish to speak to.
I am not sure if anyone knows yet what the Metaverse really is or how it will evolve over time however we will continue to improve our Platform bringing existing & new customers into their own Metaverse using UMA Vision.
